I’m in a state where I need to keep catalytic converters. I really want to keep h-pipe sound (as opposed to x-pipe sound) with stock mufflers but the MRT catted pipe is expensive!

Would a flowmaster American Thunder cat back with stock h-pipe sound similar? Or should I just spend.

I’ve actually seen a clean MRT H-pipe with sensors included on marketplace, but it’s for a 99-04. Could I make that work on my 96?

I ran stock mid-pipe and Flowmaster american thunder on my old '03 GT for many years. Was plenty loud that you could hear me coming from down the street.

I have stock exhaust on my current '00 and think if I were to change anything, i would just do a cat-back again.

It's all personal preference. I've never liked excessively loud exhaust hence why just the cat-back was always fine for me.

I’ve done similar on both accounts.
1. Came with Bassani cat-back and all 4 cats (CA law). High-flow cats; still passed smog. Sounded good! No droning.
2. Now, the FlowMaster cat-back with Series 44 mufflers. Same high-flow cats. An occasional drone, but rare. Passes smog and is a tad louder/raspier than the Bassani… :)

You could also just get your mufflers of choice welded in place of stock mufflers. On my '99GT, I just had 2 chamber Flowmasters welded in, and it sounded fantastic. That's a cheaper option than either.

There shouldn't be much difference between '96 and the New Edge, maybe a couple of hangers would be different. Any competent exhaust shop should be able to make it work.

Thanks everyone!
So just mufflers… what’s the difference between FM 44 and FM 40?

There’s yer best suggestion right there. Most affordable; same result. Plus, sometimes the cat-back’s don’t seem to fit and clearance quite like the stockers.
