2003 GT convertible with SR progressive lowering springs, Koni progressive shocks , frame connectors, strut tower bar, camber/ castor plates and 18 inch wheels and tires. I find the ride too stiff/solid. I am considering switching to coil overs and going back to 17 inch wheels and tires. What is your opinion re: the change? Are coil overs the answer? If so, what company would you recommend?

Good question. Bought the car with Tein lowering springs and stock shocks. It had a terrible ride, wobbled because it couldn't be wheel aligned, and followed every irregularity in the road . I left it lowered buy upgraded the suspension . I like the looks of the lowered car but want to improve the ride.

I discovered on my 1994 gt after it was lowered it had a stiff ride, trimming bump stop seemed to fix a little but the actual problem was the stock replacement rear shocks, i believe they were koni, bottoming out. Changing shocks to fox body length seemed to help, i also heard geo tracker rear shocks are similar.

Contact Maxium Motorsports and see what their techs recommend to give you an idea of what could be improved and why. You can go nuts with improvements if you wanted to spend the money.

Lowering and low profile tires tends to make the ride harsher.

Coil-overs may not be the answer. It's dependent on which coil-overs you go with, because some of the cheaper kits outright suck. The good stuff is expensive.

I have eibach pro-kit and Bilstiens on my SN95 and the ride is fantastic. COmfortable ride, although it's rough over broken pavement. It's not a caddilac ride by any means, but for a mustang it's decent. On my Fox, i have max motorsports coil-overs. Also pretty decent ride. Difference is cost however. Of the top of my head my MM coil-over setup cost me $2500 just for the front setup. Meanwhile i think my eibach springs were $350 and the Bilstiens were $600ish.

Cheap stuff is often cheap for a reason. There are often places where you can go cheaper without too much of an impact, but good shocks/struts are usually not cheap.

I really like the Bilsein's I have on my Challenger, but that's a very different car in terms of size, weight, and power than my Mustang. Heavy cars ride differently in my experience, but are not nearly as much fun in the turns. :)
