if you look at the stock MAF there is a large vein that goes down the middle of it that I always thought was the choke point. Don't forget even if you have a plastic pipe the upper and lower intake at least on a 94 is aluminum as well.

This is slightly off topic as I have a 4.6, but matching cfm flow to engine capability and maintaining velocity and temps down is universal. That said, with modifications, at some point you need to allow for more cfm via the tb and intake pipe and potential manifold. You can easily calculate tb cfm needs via expected engine rpm, but what do the stock maf and pipe flow?

So based on that, at what point does a stock pipe impede flow?
that's a great question.
It is exactly what we hot rodders wonder about with EVERY item on the engine.
Tim moss has some old but good info out there. Google it.
His thing was intakes and head flow vs HP.
I will make an unsubstantiated statement about blow though mass air systems ( turbo, supercharged ) A 3" pipe with a slot style maf will read and calculate air flow that will make 1000hp. but remember thats above atmospheric pressure.
David Vizard is a fantastic resource, look him up on YOUTUBE.
