I have a 96 GT auto looking to change to manual would the 3650 be the best choice, I have the option to pick up one cheap from a buddy who totaled his car

The way the speed is transmitted from the tranny to the speedo is different. I believe the vss is mechanical on the t45 and electronic on the tr3650 or something like that. And there are some differences that need to be addressed to do the swap. I guess what Im trying to say is that theres work involved to its not a plug and play. If you dont mind doing those little things to do the swap then I say go for it, otherwise just get a t45.

Id say no on a 3650 they're nothing special.
