Wacky Tach

I've got a problem with my tach on my 95 gt. It won't move under idle but as soon as I give it a quick rev the tach needle moves...but counter clockwise.
How does the tach work...is it mechanical or does it work using a signal.
whats wrong with mine?

sounds like a faulty ground or signal wire. Check all your ignition wires under the hood (not plug wires but the ignition system wires to the dizzy and coil.)
