My 98 gt auto is having this weird tick coming from behind the dash when accelerating past 1500rpms but it only happens while the car is moving. If I rev it while it is in park or neutral it doesn't happen which helped me rule out lifter tick. And I don't think it'd something with the trans or diff due to the location. Please help me y'all I'm stumped and getting worried.
Sounds like speedo cable. Sorry i dont have much experience with the speedo behind the dash, but im sure someone here does. Give it some time and someone will respond

does your odometer work? Maybe there is a gear chewed up in it that is making the noise?

I had a noise like that on my 98 gt
And it never went away in fact since iv had the car
It's been like that for 9 years
Still made that noise when I pulled the engine and swap it for the mach1 engine nothing wrong with the automatic transmission nor the engine I pulled everything was good fly wheel torque converter the separation plate the starter
It was all good nothing wrong with it
That engine is still running in another mustang
And it never went away in fact since iv had the car

I would check by your firewall for anything that could be tapping against it. I had a tapping behind my gauge cluster in my 95 5.0 that turned out to be a vacuum line tapping ever so slightly against the firewall, only when the engine was running and cold (a little rougher than when warm). The foam isolator slid off the vacuum lines.
