This question is probably beating a dead horse, but I finally have enough miles on my motor that it's time for it's first oil change. I've always heard to run synthetic in these cars, and my buddy strongly recommends either Mobil 1 or Castrol, and he said he would run 10w 30, but I had 5w 20 in my mind. What do you guys recommend?

Royal purple, castrol, mobile.

As for viscosity grade, refer to your manual. In the manual it should list two and recommend one based on the temp you drive in.

I recently switched the mustang to Castrol 10w-30 synblend.

I've used Castrol GTX 10W30 the past 3 oil changes. Just did the oil today and went Pennzoil 5W30. Happy with both.

Castrol synthetic blend, 5w30. Its almost free for me so it's what I use. Changing your oil regularly with quality oil is the most important thing. Castrol vs Mobil 1 vs the uber expensive brands like Amsoil and RP isn't as big a deal as lots of people make it out to be in the average street car engine.

Definitely will only ever use a Motorcraft filter, just wasn't sure on what weight is best. And I have no manual with my car for reference lol.

I'm a Valvoline guy on the Mustangs. Whatever name brand is for sale on the DDs. On my last race motor I used exclusively Valvoline VR1 10-30 and SAE30. And the bearings looked brand new after almost 3 seasons. I'm sold on the VR1 for the race car.

I would ask the builder on using conventional vs synthetic. My understanding is that some don't recommend synthetic until you have at lest 10K miles but that depends on the internals used and tolerances.

I've got a 5.0 push rod engine for normal driving I use 10W40 mineral, and when I go to the track I use 15W40 or 20W50. I dump the oil at about 1000 miles.

Bumping this one up because I'm slightly OCD with oil.

On my LX I ran Castrol GTX for the 5 years I owned it. I started with 10w30 the first year and then went to 10W40. Always K&N filters. I would drain the oil every 3000kms/1900 miles. I made the mistake of running 5w30 once and the car was burning it hardddd. Back to 10W40 minimal burning. Very happy with this oil. IMO with my frequent drain intervals regular oil is just fine.

PO of my GT told me he put in some kind of 5w50 synthetic oil in it form his work. It was pretty much done before I bought the car so I left it in. As soon as she comes out of storage immediate 10w40 GTX oil change lol. I have 2 more K&N oil filters lying around then I'll start using Motorcraft.

I've been running cheap, conventional Castrol 10w40 in my 410w but that will change to Mobil 1 synthetic 10w40 next oil change. I used to run 10w30 in my 5.0 but it seemed to use a quart between changes. I switched to 10w40 and it only lost whatever I spilled.

I run 5w20 Mobil 1 synthetic in my '98 and the '05.

I only ran valvoline on both of my mustangs. One only has 4k miles (1972 coupe 306) on the build so i havent ran synthetic. The other has 110k+ miles (94 gt DD) that i recently put the 10w30 "high mileage" synthetic blend. Seems to run realllly gooood. With a leaky rear main seal ive lost about 3.5 quarts in 8k miles on 10w40, and so far with 10w30 about 1.5k ive lost none. The recommended is 10w30. and since im in socal i dont have to worry about winter since the temp averages in the 80's anyway. and also i noticed it seems to idle better and rev better with the 10w30. maybe coindenence (typo), but works for me.

my dad on the other hand only puts motorcraft synthetic blend on his 07 gt/cs. unfortunately he isnt as mechanically knowledgeable as he thinks so getting a comment bout it will just be useless.
