Seriously about to lose it, trying to put an X pipe on my mustang but can’t get to one of the passenger side exhaust manifold studs because starter is in the way. Tried removing starter but can’t get to the top bolt. Very frustrated and have no idea what to do.

Get a bunch of wobbler extensions and perhaps a swivel. It'll reach awkwardly around the pipe

yea I was just remembering 2 swivels and 3 foot of extensions and then I was able to get it to push against the firewall to hold it in place while I tightened from the bottom.

first of all, what engine and year
to remove starter, you will need a few extintions 10 mill shallow socket 1/4 drive hit all 3 bolts from the front top of lower control arm you will also be in between the a/c compressor i say 3 bolts for 4.6
thats how i have always removed starters

and as far as the passenger side manifold studs starter should have plenty of clearance
take a pic of that starter and studs on manifold never had that problem
come up with something

Yup...the 3rd starter bolt is a bitch. Just like others have stated, you need a combination of extensions, a swivel all reaching the length of the engine. It helps the car is up in the air, but can be done on jack stands. Youll be feeling the 3rd bolt blind as you adopt extensions towards the front of the engine. Might need to slip through the engine mount, might need to unbolt engine mount and raise engine a little, youll get it tho. Every modular owener, car, truck, van, rv, whatever has this experience.

When replacing the starter, only use 2 bolts in the accessible location. Leave 3rd bolt out. Function just

oh I thought we were talking the collector bolts. With the car off of the ground just on jackstands with shorty headers anyway I have never had too much trouble getting it. A couple of extensions and a swivel and it isn't too hard for me.

5.0 is much easier
4.6 top bolt is a bit of a pain but with right tools easy
That's car off the ground
