Well my rear differential is dying. Im looking to replace it, or have it rebuilt. I'm not very knowledgeable with rears, and I dont know exactly how bad mine is, but when I tried to top off the diff fluid, the fill plug was covered in metal shavings, and it starts clunking/popping badly when I take sharp turns. I was looking at one I found on Craigslist: 31 spline Eaton carrier, 31 spline superior axles, and a T/a rear end cover girdle, and I'll have to have some 3.73s put in too. What would yall advise on this setup, or should I try something else? I am on a budget too, thanks.

I would rebuild it instead of just rolling a complete rear under the car. You said you have gears, just get a bearing kit and a trac-loc rebuild kit and you'll probably have everything you need.

I have rebuilt 20-30 8.8 rear ends and I would never just roll one under my car without opening it up and going through it first.

Is rebuilding a rear difficult? I have been told something like installing gears should be left to people that know what they are doing, but is rebuilding a rear end as involved? Thanks

If you don't know anything about rebuilding the rearend don't try it! If you don't get it right you could do more damage than help. You have to make sure it is shimmed just right or it will whine while accelerating, or roar while letting off the throttle, or even worse explode the whole rearend all together. Do yourself a favor and find someone who knows what they are doing to be there with you while you try it the first time just to make sure you do every thing exactly right or pay a professional shop that knows what they are doing.

Side gears are bad. Mine did the same thing. I just replaced the rear end because I found another with 3.73's already installed for cheap. A lot cheaper than it wouldve cost me to have the old one rebuilt and the price of the gears. A reputable shop will charge you around 4-500 for gears and install so keep that in mind too.

When I got my rear end rebuilt 3/4 years ago the mustang specialist who setup it up for did fantastic job. He put my FR3.73's and its so quiet that I can hear my transmission in lower gears, then anything else in the car while the radio is off (except) for the exhaust note lol.
