You can get there many ways, but what I've learned, and it seems to hold in car stuff, tools, and more... it is better to get quality stuff used, than knock off junk new. I bet if you pieced it together, you could put a nice h/c/i setup for under 2 grand easy. I see AFRs on craigslist or local Mustang Club or swap meets all the time, some cases even new or already worked. A good intake, GT40 or even better $2-400, cams are hit & miss but even if you go new $200ish. A used roller cam is perfectly acceptable, they don't wear. The heads is where you'll spend money, I'd stick with quality. Even if you had to do the heads, and nothing else until you recover. My .02. BTW, one of my competitors made 299rwhp with shaved iron GT40s (no portwork), Cobra intake (no porting), Cobra ECU, 1.7rr, Basani headers and x-pipe, stock rebuilt bottom end, e-cam. Seems a little far fetched knowing these 302s as much as I do, and he could have fibbed about some of the internals, but I saw the car run on the dyno.
