In regards to conventional oil.... The reason for the 3/30 rule is not due to viscosity breakdown but rather due to blowby gases. The blowby gases from combustion that get past your piston rings (That's why you have a PCV system) will disolve into the oil thereby creating an acid that starts to eat at your bearings. Slop (clearance) in your engine is accelerated by the acid eating up the bearing surfaces. This is the reason for the rule. If you drive your car every weekday and only put on just over 1,000 miles in 3 months then I would guess you are doing short run errands. This prevents the engine from running at operating temperature when your piston rings are designed to seal best. Because of this your engine is not getting the opporunity to vent off the blowby gasses as well and this can cause an acid build-up in your oil even though you have driven it very little. I would go ahead and change the oil. An underworked engine can be just as hard on it as an overworked engine. Ramps? If I needed to raise a car to get under it I just jack it up and put the jack stands in place. I've never used ramps. If you don't have a floor jack there is a jack in the trunk. I never had a problem getting a jack under a car. Steve
