Re: Strange Sound -- *Please HELP* First, I read the problem is solved. Whew!! That was a bugger. Paul, I wasn't thinking seized as much as I was thinking just wiped out (sloppy). Perhaps a floating race that is spinning in it's seating area. As for the pitch changing, if you listen closely you can hear a change in the speed of the pulsation of the sound. I grew up around audio equipment and have a musical ear so I pick up on some real subtlties. The pitch of the sound doesn't change but the speed of the pulsation does. Since the problem was found to be related to the rear main seal the vibration of the crankshaft would account for this. Also I said it sounded like something small. This is a result of how narrow the rear main is, not a whole lot of surface area. As for the sound continuing for a second or two after the engine is shut off, the engine does not instantly come to a stop when it is shut off. It coasts to a stop because there is nothing to stop it's inertia except for cylinder compression, and air can be compressed. Congrats on getting it fixed. These kinds of things drive me nuts!!!
