I just bought some 1993 Cobra R style rims in 17x9 for my 94 GT. Looking to find the best tire size set up for these rims. Obviously the wider the better. Can you guys give me advice?

Rear: 285/40 is the widest and best PROPER fit for our 17x9’s. Yes, you can fit wider, but then you’re creeping into bulging issues, removing the quad shock or flipping it and speedometer issues. And you won’t have to roll the fenders

Front: 265/45. Yes, you can fit a 275, but if you’re gonna go 275 front and 285 rear (not a whole helluva lot of difference really), you may as well go 275’s all the way around and get longer wear since you can then do a 4 tire rotation.

My $.02

Not super worried about rotation as I dont drive the car alot. I will probably do the 285/40 in the rear... will 274 in front cause rubbing in turns ect?

Might be pushing it on the 275 fronts, thoughI know there are members of this forum that run them.

Are you lowered?

275 is the widest typically recommended on a 9" wheel, and will most likely be more readily available than a 285 if you run into an emergency need. (Probably less $, too.) 275/40-17 fits up front just fine. Mine *just* kiss the sway bar at full lock, but this could be because the bar is bigger than stock.

If you're not going to run the stock size up front, then do yourself a favor, and just run 275/40-17's all the way around. A 285 on the back isn't enough of a difference to be worthwhile.

I have 275 but 19" up front and I did have to add a small steering rack limiter but that is because of the 19" not so much the tire.
