ok so i have another full motor out of an 86 or 89 merc. i want to build a 306 to put in the pony and then build a 347 over time. I found interesting porting info on the e7 heads and since i have lots of time on my hands im going to port the e7's on the merc and then put her back together as a fresh 306. is there a mild cam profile that would work good with a 306 with e7's ported to flow between 180-200 cfms in the .6 lift range? I know the heads are pretty weak but ported with all the spare time i have they will do me just fine. I'm only paying for pistons gaskets and bearings. maybe a cam if theres a better profile than stock. my family owns a machine shop so its all pretty much free. also would i need to worry about injectors and such?

I would go aftermarket cam for sure, those grand maquis engines were non-HO engines and they had the non-HO cam which is worse than one that you'd find in a stock mustang or HO motor. (not sure if they had piston relief valves either)

I've heard of guys doing pretty decent on ported e7s. Honestly I would look in to a f-303 or TFS1 (both smog legal since I see you live in CA) for the 306. They're good cams especially since your using ported stock heads you dont want crazy lift anyway. I'd atleast use 24# injectors on a 306, definitely bigger on a 347.

Yeah that's what I thought. I migh be able to get gt40 heads for next to nothing if my family member who owns a couple recycling yard comes through. Just depends if they get them in time for the build.

If you port the heck out of the e7's (since your family has a machine shop) and do a lot of tweaking, you might get in to the 12's. a guy on allfordmustangs runs 13.36 with home ported E7s, 1.7 rrs, Performer intake, 4R70W, shift kit, alum driveshaft, 3.73s.

Wow that's not bad. Yeah I found write up on porting the e7's and shaping them like the gt40's guy got 213 cfm out of each runner which is a huge improvement over the 158-165 range they are in stock. I found out the other motor and trans I have are out of an 87 so it should have the e7 and not the e6 heads

Don't have gt40's and don't want to really blow money on them because I'll be putting afr's on the 347 now granted if I get a set for free you bet your ass I'll port them.

Don't have money. My current motor has interesting issues that I figure budget building a 306 with a few things like rr and a cam with a factory gt40 intake should be pretty peppy. Where can I get injectors?

306, ported gt40's TFS 1, Crane 1.7RR's, Cobra Upper or GT40 Upper or TFS Upper. With the proper suspension mods there are guys running that combo doing mid to high 12's Heck there even doing it on a stock bottom end.
