Hey guys, i know a guy that has a 96-98 cobra motor setting in his shop and he told a budy of mine like 5 months ago that its got a knock. What should I offer this guy for the motor and what could be causing the knock? I'm going to rebuild the motor when i get it on the stand anyway with new bearings, rings, etc etc. So give me an idea! thanks

well personally i would throw those B heads in the Trash and get some C heads.

B-heads>2v heads. Not like 96-98 Cobra's don't sneeze out 500 rwhp with a blower bolted on, I don't think those B heads are holding it back at all.

500 bucks, it's probably a spun bearing, followed by super wide open tolerance, and probably a bad crank as well.

sure they are better than 2V heads, but if i were going through the trouble I would go with the best...

2V versus 4V is not worht the extra 6 grand IMO to build it the way i want...

I have always been partial to the 2Vs and will eventually play with a 4V but, i like the challenge coming from a 2V and getting 365 RWHP out of. Thats my goal next season, if I dont put in the C4 instead and do the motor in two seasons.

so i should offer 500 bucks then. Sounds good, well i'm not building a super fast car here.

I got the stock cobra wiring and computer and a blown t45 that either i'm going to replace or rebuild... and i'm just doing a basic cobra swap in the car ya know. Nothing $$$ just rebuild the thing with stock internals and put it in there... maybe a tune and light weight drive train parts i have to get anyway, and some 4.30's. I just want the car to look good and sound and cruise good. Right now its set up for handling with springs, struts, poly bushings etc. But it has all the cobra stuff on it minus the gauges... even has a cobra air bag... thanks to my ex girlfriend haha.

So if its a spun bearing its just f'ed up the crank right? or do i have to do some block machining?

I may have spun the the block, meaning it needs resized, it may have spun on the journal, and the crank can be ground. It may not be spu at all, but it's likely, that's why I said 500

cool cool, my budy asked him a while back what he would take for it and he said 800 so i guess i'll start with 5 and work to 7, but i'm not gonna go over that for a f'ed up motor ya know. I can get a running one with low miles for like 1800 from a buddy but i want to rebuild it before it goes in anyway... maybe a little extra CR ... who knows.

Yeah, i mean a knock, is a vagues thing. The entire bottom end, including the block may be junk, or it may just need new bearings and no machine work. until you take it down, you just don't know.

You can buy a whole Mark VIII in running condition for 1800 LOL Take the motor out and sell the car for parts and make your money back easy.

yep but mark 8's weren't big sellers in my area. I've seen one that someone was driving and thats it. I've seen more cobra's than mark 8's

Keep an eye Craigslist. Parts for the Mark VIII's are getting more and more rare. I know in Atlanta a couple of months ago there 3 Mark VIII's in drivable condition for under 1000 bucks.
