For a 97 GT. I want a street legal setup that sounds nice. I really don't care about performance at this juncture. So far I know I want a set of Borla mufflers and apparently all Mustang guys get boners for SLP exhaust tips. I'll be throwing parts at the shop and expecting them to make it fit together, so should I bother with a new X/H pipe? Also, what can I do to get rid of the three cats which, to me, seem excessive?

Six cats to be exact, get an aftermarket catted X pipe which will only have 2 and they will be high flows

And I'll be passing emissions still? Does the x pipe fill in for where the cats are now? From my memory the first cat is right after the headers.

bassani catted X
borla catback

a little bit louder, but quiet when you are at low throttle.
it has a sound to it, not just the generic "loud"

i have Bassani O/R X (catless) and SLP LM2 catback. I love it, noticable at idle but not crazy, and loud and proud when you get on it.

1998 Mustang GT, Bassani X-Pipe, SLP Loudmouth 2 Catback.

video clip of it on my stock motor before anything else really went on the car.

as long as you have cats on your midpipe, it will be street legal. the stock midpipe has 6 cats, but the O2 sensors are before the cats, and 2 more after the cats. and the guys with catless X's like myself, when you get a tune or tuner, you can turn off the rear (after cat) O2 sensors and it will not throw the light, but you will need a shady inspector to pass you. most average joes at inpsection shops just require a little monetary motivation, if you know what I mean.

and yes SLP tips are awesome, the came with my catback. you can tell a difference in the sound from the double walled SLP tips and regular tips. and they look awesome as well.

Holy crap, those are pricey. I don't want to spend 1000 dollars on exhaust when I can put that money towards much more important things on the car. Can I reuse the stock H pipe while ditching the front 6 cats for 2 replacement ones? Is that just a matter of how much welding the shop is going to do?

buy used exhaust. I sold my Bassani catted X for $200 picked up. I had to hold onto it for two years at that price (1/3 retail new)...people kept making me offers of $150 shipped or lower.

it's not like it "wears out" over time or anything. the most you'll need is new bolts and a new passenger side manifold gasket/RTV.

yeah find you a nice used catted x, and look in to flowmaster mufflers. they are fairly cheap and sound great.
