No custom cams. Ok im doing a REAL budget build on my stang and im hopping as long as everything goes through today to buy a set of gt40 heads extruded and honed from a member on here. The heads have been freshed up and new springs good to .500 lift put on. So should i buy a new cam good for those springs or just put a set of 1.7 RR on my stock cam? I can eather get the cam or the 1.7's not both, so if i get the cam ill run my stock rockers from my e7 heads. I know alot of you will say save and get both which i will in the future when the heads come back off in a year or two and get fully ported. But i have made it were ill be at an easy 250+hp for under a grand so im happy eather way. Im leaning more towards the 1.7 so i can just do a custom cam in the future without wasting money on a cam now. Thanks guys :headbang:

save and get both..j/k :laughing5:

If your gonna do a cam, do it once. The difference in a aftermarket cam and a stock cam with 1.7's is maybe 2/10 in the quarter mile.

I would do the TFS Stage 1 cam with the stock rockers for now.

It is easier to put a set of pedestal rockers on the heads after the cam install than it is to pull off the heads, timing chain cover, timing chain etc for a cam.

when i first started on my motor i did just the ported gt40x heads, edelbrock rpm intake, 1.72 roller rockers with the stock cam, 70 tb, and headers back exhaust and when it was tuned it put down around 260 hp and 300 tq, then when the intake was ported, adjustable fpr, 30#injectors and inline fuel pump, maf, underdrive pulleys the numbers went to around 270-275 and torque was the same, it hasnt been on the dyno for awhile and since then i have gears, torque converter, no cats, different mufflers, deleted a/c and smog, trick flow fuel rails, and went from the ported rpm intake to a ported rpm 2 intake and coming next month or two is a custom super charger cam and 42# injectors and hoping to get back on the dyno so i can get before numbers for when i put my supercharger on

so even though it is good to do a cam while changing heads you dont need to to make decent power since you are just taking the heads back off in a year or two, id go the easiest and fastest route with the rockers now since you are just going to take the heads off again anyways and when you take the heads off to get ported do the cam and get even more power out of it all

if i was you i would go with a steeda #19 cam(.480 lift on 1.6rr, if you put 1.7rr on factory cam you will only get .488lift,i think) then save up or make a deal with someone and try to get cobra rocker arms, they are 1.7rr, and then try to get .550 lift beehive springs or some bigger lift springs because the steeda #19 cam has .518lift on 1.7rr

I agree with LAFENATU on the the whole cam an rocker arms, rockers arms are alot easy to put on

1.7 rockers on the stock cam is only .472, with 1.72 rockers it is .479, and the steeda 19 cam is only .510 lift with 1.7's and .516 lift with 1.72's
