Hey guys, now that i've finally got the ball rolling again on my car, it's time for me to start thinking ahead a bit. I've gotten most of the stuff on the exterior done that i want, and my exhaust will be in soon too. so that leads me to the question at hand.

V6's can sound mean as hell with a cam, so should i get one? i have no idea what to look for in one or how to install it, but i'm sure research on that will lead me to the answers for that.
I want to know if you think:
1. if i can handle the install
2. if it's worth it
3. if i should do anything else to my engine while i have things off
4. if i should do this before mustang week (while pushing off the interior)
and 5. what cam i should get.

looking for some help from V6 guys especially. g36 monkey Orange 94 atlanticblue98

Alright son.

Personally, I wouldn't waste time just throwing a cam in the car without supporting mods (heads/intakes)

Basically, you take off all the stuff on the front of the motor, timing chain cover, etc. Relieve tension on the timing chain (good time to change it) pull intakes off.

I forgot whether or not you have to drag the lifters out to change the cam, but I do believe so.

Could you handle it? Probably, but why so much work for menial gains. Without a full build or boost, the V6 doesn't respond well to much haha

would i get a better exhaust note? that's the reason i was looking into one, but i'm not sure it'd be worth it if all that has to come off

Okay, I'll try to answer this as best as I can.

I would recommend picking up a Haynes manual for an installation guide.

1. if i can handle the install Personally I would try to get someone who knows what they're doing to help you the first time. I had a lot of help from my dad, without him I have no idea what to do.
2. if it's worth it Yes, but really dependents on future mods...
3. if i should do anything else to my engine while i have things off This is a hard question to answer... really depends on your budget and your future plans... there's definitely a lot you could while digging into the motor
4. if i should do this before mustang week (while pushing off the interior) No idea on this... really depends on how much experience you/someone helping you has. You have to keep in mind that things never go as plan. So if you decide to do it make sure you have looooootttttssss of time!
5. what cam i should get. This I can't answer. Really depends what you're planing for sound, performance, drive-ability and future mods.

thanks oj, and it'd be mostly for sound and driveability. it is my daily afterall. and i don't think i'll do much more of anything as far as engine mods..

Mine without the supercharger basically sounded the same, mine is also the bigger 4.2 and has other mods though. I'm not sure what the sound difference of a 3.8 with just a cam difference. Maybe do a google & youtube search and see if you can find someone that did what you're thinking of doing.

ps someone should move this into the v6 section. need to make that section more lively, also this isn't a "stupid" question for the safe zone.

It's in the V6 Section?

;p

A cam will change the way the car sounds at idle, yes. My cam makes my car idle like a 351W since I set the idle low. But you need to look at cam specs to know what you're going to get. I really don't think it's worth the trouble to do the cam and nothing else. Just being honest.

i appreciate your honesty! really, that's why i ask questions. if you weren't honest then no point to share different opinions, right!
and yeah i'd love to have a nice idle like that. i'll look into it a bit more. if my friend says he'll help me then i think it could be a fun weekend project.

Ok. is it worth it? IF YOU THINK IT IS ! and its worth some horsepower and sound . I recommend CompCams 218/226 .500/.500 108LSA watch a video of it here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ztG3_NyHSUo it sounds pretty great for a v6 and will boost power for you . I would recommend changing the valve springs but its not necessary ( They dont require it ) but I would just to say you replaced them easy as they are . Changing a cam isnt hard at all its just getting to it in some cars its easier to pull the motor in others you can go straight through the front . Either way pull water pump , timing cover , brackets , pulleys , proble radiator out , power steering pump , alternator and should be able to get into it . I would recommend getting some experienced help ( Someone who has been there done that ) to help you since you seem a little hesitant but none the less some people just learn stuff by doing it ( MYself ) if you are one of those people jump in the water and learn to swim my friend Good luck ! Hope to hear her cammin and slammin before long man

Everyone should have a Haynes/chilton manual for every car they have.
There is a wealth of info for the DIYer in all of us.
What are budget heads and intakes that he might use for his 3.8. (windstar/aerostar)? Since he wants to change the C, he might as well upgrade the H and I too. Like the exploder swaps in the 5.0.

How about giving the heads and intake a mild port?
not an awful idea..

first decide on what you want the car for. then make a budget.

what do you want the car for?
just a daily that's fun and turns heads. i just don't want it to be like every other SN you see out there. i'd loveee to dive into a 4.2 swap or something, but i don't have the necessary tools, time, or money to do so, so i'm just trying to figure out what i can do on a budget with what i have.

The comp cam would sound pretty mean in there man , I would get some head work done (Bigger intake and exhaust valves ) and get some upgraded valve springs if it were me and personally stay away from nitrous but thats just my personal opinion ..some like it hot some like it cold ... Maybe throw a procharger on it ?? just a idea ?? would be sick IMO!! YOUR WELCOME FOR THE KIND WORDS !!! I dont get that comment often !!! LOL
