use of an HID in a non-projector type housing (such as the smoked or stock ones) is not only irresponsible and disrespectful towards the other drivers on the road, it significantly diminishes the increased vision you would normally get from a HID headlight. a stock-type halogen housing is not capable of refracting, focusing, and directing the light of the HID bulb like a projector can. A projector headlight keeps a tight, aim-able beam, where as the stock one just scatters it all around the place, especially up

Many people have used HIDs in stock housings with excellent results. According to something I read good HID bulbs are actually blacked out on the bottom edge of the bulb, thus keeping the light off the bottom of the housing and being reflected upwards.

Where did I see all the sets of HID bulbs on display? It showed the different # options and what color it shined. I cannot really remember, can you tell? I am going to guess @ the #'s: 4300, 6000, and maybe 9000? I want some and am trying to know which ones to buy. Thanks!!

get a set of headlights similar to mine. projectors, but with the blacked out look. even with halogen bulbs, the light output difference is DRAMATIC. then throw your HIDs in.

Onyx: many people THINK they have had great result because they're never in the car coming at the HIDs. just because people aren't flashing their high beams at you does not mean your lights aren't blinding them. and I've seen some comments to the effect of I don't give a shit about the other people, not my problem - when they're weaving into your lane, it's going to be your problem.

I am not a fan of that Halo look. That, to me, is ricey. That's just my thinking though! I think I'm going to buy from The Whistler. He has HIDs that looks stock, I think. I need my lights to be bright, just not the Halo/Projector looking. I was ready to buy them, now I must get my top fixed!! Maybe next month! Thanks a lot!!

If ANYONE finds a set of GOOD projectors that look somewhat OEM, let me know. I've looked and looked and you won't find them anywhere. Most projector headlights you find aren't even designed for HID's. Look at the ones American Muscle sells, they say not intended for HID's..

Hey, do you have some pics of your car with those ones you posted? I assume you have the ones in the first link...

People having good results is a direct response to how well they see at night, not whether or not they are blinding people. Even stock HIDs in vehicles can be very bright, i see it all the time. I am not like those "other people," i care very much about blinding other drivers and by aiming the stock headlights down a slight bit it will be just fine with HIDs.

There are STOCK vehicles out there with HIDs that do NOT have projector headlights, it's not a requirement. Some HID kits say not to use them with projector housings because they are not made for it.

and just for the hell of it: I have yet to see a set of projectors on a Mustang that I thought looked good.

Kind of hard to differentiate some of them, but im pretty sure 6000 is brightest with a hint of blue?

M-666. Yeah, that works!! The pic that I am thinking of shows it looking @ different cars, different lights. It was maybe 20 feet away? This works rather well though!! I`like the 6k look though, maybe the 5k! I want it to be pure white. Thanks!!

whether they look good or not is a matter of personal taste

daytime shot of the headlamps
cobra087.jpg

daytime shot of the HIDs
cobra054.jpg

your guess as to which one is the 6000K

and a night shot of the HIDs
keep in mind this shot is taken directly under your average streetlight. so the beams that you see projected are how much MORE brighter they are than the streetlight's output
cobra060.jpg

an idea of the color
cobra013.jpg

My setup consists of the DEPO headlamps I referenced here, plus an eBay set of 6000K 9006 HIDs. Keep in mind that the dual-lense style of the DEPO headlamp requires you to swap your 9004 bulb setup for a 9005/9006 bulb setup. A plug-and-play wiring harness is included in the kit and takes about ten minutes to install. The HIDs then plug into the 9006 low beam bulbs.

As with anything, I am pleased but I have my gripes:

1. on the corner lenses, the rubber trim around the edges (weatherstrip?) cracked and peeled off within 2 months
2. the headlights flicker once about every 30 minutes and both sides randomly go out once a week (wiggle the fuse on the wiring harness, and it's back)
3. the HIDs interfere with radio reception - I only get my strongest station. It works fine with no headlights on, or just the parking lights on, but the minute you pull the button out for headlights, static on everything but 94.5FM. Tried turning just one side on. No dice. Tried grounding the HIDs better. No dice. Tried getting a better antenna - nothing. I have isolated the problem to either the HID kit itself or the fact that I'm running so much wire (stock wiring harness into adapter harness into HID harness is about 30 feet). I'm going to try a different brand HID kit.

But for the price I paid, about $200, I can't gripe that much. They look alright in the daytime, and are insanely better than what was in there at night, and don't seem to bother the other drivers at all. I got a set of halo one piece black housing headlights as a partial trade for doing some work on a mustang, so I'm going to take my old maculloch 4300K HID kit out of the Probe and put it in with those headlamps and see what's what. I paid almost $250 for that kit back in the day when HIDs were 'rare.'

that sounds like a horrible quality kit.

Indeed, i've definitely heard of HID kits messing with the radio though, I know someone that has the same problem, maybe cause they are cheaper. Those projector headlights look a lot better than the 1 pc, if i had to pick some i'd go with those for sure. I'm sticking to the factory style housing though. Love the color btw.
