Found a engine, I need some help from the engine guys :D

Well I found a rebuilt Romeo 4.6 SOHC, new pistons, rings, bearings, and rebuilt heads along with ford racing metal headgaskets and SPS technologies headbolts, complete from the pan to the intake manifold. He said it needs to be timed, however the timing chain/chain guides/tensioners/timing cover are there. I figured I could put that in my car while I rebuild my stock one with forged internals and all that good stuff :thumb: Is there anyway for me to check out this engine to make sure it is what he says it is and that its in good shape? Its cheap so I don't think I could go wrong unless its a total loss. Thanks for the tips guys as always.

well, since the engine is already out of the car, its gonna be easy to check.

first of all, hook up the timing chains and time the engine.
then, on an engine stand, flip the engine over and take off the oil pan, check out the rods, piston rings if you can see them, and the bearings. also take a look at the oil pump while you are there. rotate the engine to make sure it rotates freely. if you can, lube the cylinder walls to avoid scratching them (dont know how long ago the engine was built, dont know if it still lubed or not...)

flip the engine over, take off the valve covers, and inspect the valve seals/guides. they should look relatively new.


since i know you are worried about the block being machined, the easiest way to tell is to ask, and hopefully he is honest. also, when the oil pan is off and you are rotating the engine, if you can see the crosshatch on the cylinder walls, that means it was machined and its pretty much a new block.
