I found myself asking that same question earlier this year. I would've went with an E cam, but thats OLD technology. I eventually settled on the Comp Cams Xtreme Energy. [xe270hr-14 to be specific] Offered excellent power/torque, great sound, driveability and it works with with OBD1

Crane 2031 or the TFS Stage 1, both are extremely similar and very good cams - the TFS has more duration on the intake.

The 2031 was designed around the Cobra/Lightning GT40 Cylinder Head.

I'll suggest the Steeda #19 if you want another option. It's a nice cam for a good price.
very good cam from my understanding and less problems with the tune...

TFS Stage 1, Comp Xtreme energy, Crane and the Steeda #19 are a lot of common popular choices. There is nothing wrong w/ the Ford alphabet cams except as stated they are older technology. Picking a cam is one of the more difficult choices to make b/c it plays such a key roll in how the car runs and the power it makes. The custom cam route is always an option (which I ended up going with) but its more expensive. Either of those cams mentioned above will do well w/ your set up

I am having the same problem with this cam thing. I probably go custom cam also. Mostly everyone want "Choppy" idle. For me i really done like that idle. I like more "smooth" idle.

For the best numbers possible you have to go custom it will give you the best power curve but you have to have the rest of your set up in place or planned before hand so it can be built around that.
