Harmonic Balancer question

I knew it had @some” rust that Was visible before, but after removing the water pump, I got a full view and a whole new perspective…. Yikes! This can’t be good. Can’t be “ok”, right?

Not hurting anything. Take some emery cloth to it and it should come right off. I’d be more worried about seeing the correct timing marks

Also make sure you have clearance from the balancer and the bottom of the new pump

Ok, will do…thx! Home Depot has it available in sleeves of medium and fine grit. Will those work? And is it just like hand-sanding? 63 yrs old and don’t think (or remember!) using Emory cloth before… but I might have. I can’t be sure. I’m perplexed! Oh I don’t know!!! LOL

Worked! Thx everyone for the feedback. Not shiny & new, but at least that layer of crud/rust is off.

I always clean the rust and scale off then paint the timing marks and once again sand excess paint off. The paint will remain in the timing mark endetions. Because I can see sh!t when im trying to use the timing light. The painted marks help ALOT!

Yes it's not a bad idea to sand the whole thing down, spray a coat of primer and then black paint. Finished with a toothpick to add white paint to the timing mark(s). Added benefit is it won't rust out again for a very long time.

Had I removed it I would have done either that or just replaced it with a new one. But I really didn’t want to go to all the trouble of removing it. Lazy, yes but I mostly wasn’t sure of what I’d be doing so I erred on the side of caution ;-)
