Im trying to help out a buddy of mine who i recently sold my afr 185's to. He has a bone stock 94 gt that just blew a head gasket on it. Sone how in the process of takeing off the stock heads he broke off a few bolts in them. Instead of haveing the stockers drilled out he wants to stick the AFR's on the stock motor to save a few bucks. Ive always been told trick flows are the only heads with 2.02 vales that will clear stock pistons. A few local mustang guys told him the AFR's will clear and still beable to run a small cam , is this true? Hes building a big bore 331 (347 ci but at a 331 rod ratio) stroker but the dart block will be a few months b4 he gets it and his stang can't be down that long. I told him he's probly better off picking up a set of used ho heads considering i think he broke 5 bolts off in them lol. What do you guys think? I've Tried heat , easy outs , soaking them with p.b. blaster & reverse thread drill bits and broke one in it. They are stuck good and will have to be drilled and retaped professionally. If the AFR's will clear that kinda cam could he get away with? If they won't clear wouldnt you think a used set of stock heads would be cheeper?

its going to be close i ran mine with a tf1 and it bearly cleared too close for confort so i notch the pistons. its easy and can be done with the engine in the car. as for the broke bolt looks like you tried everything i would. good luck.

If he NEEDS his car and is low on cash, scour craigslist for some E7's.

Buying a good set for 50 bucks isnt uncommon. They are cheap!

So if he left the cam alone he should be ok then? Ive been lookin for some e7s or even some 351 heads for him as i have the bolts he could use for a bit. The cheapest machine shop he found wants 25 per bolt and after i looked theres actually 6 bolts broke , 4 on one and 2 on the outher. For that price I've seen bare used gt40's lol. I have no clue how he managed to snap that many on a low milage motor (83k). Blows my mind , I've broken 1 or 2 when in a rush but 6! Now that takes talent.

What's the best way to check piston to valve clarence? Put some kind of putty on the piston replace said head , rotate the motor slowly by hand and mic the putty for the gap? Thats what my little pea brain comes up with atleast. If thats right what kind of putty is used. Would he beable to use stock pushrods is he used 1.6 rr's and stock cam? I've Never tried anything like this. When i put new heads on its always been on to a built motor. What's the safe range on piston to valve clarence? Would a thicker head gasket help , and if so wich head gasket? He's pretty much desided to go ahead and run those heads (providing they will clear safely) a street heat intake and new exhaust till his motor gets here. Would those mods need a tune or should he be ok with that?

185's are probably not going to fit, even with a stock cam. If they do...it's gonna be reeeeeeeal close. He can always see if someone wants to trade for a set of 165's.

AFR 165's flow what a wedge head does, with a smaller intake valve. :icon_rr:

do a search on here there was a guy who bought the tool and said he would rent it out or buy one. then disasemble one of the old heads insert the cutting tool instead of the valve use a drill to turn the valve and cut. take your time there is no need to go deeper than the valve reliefs on the piston just wider. bring the piston to tdc and tape everything off. its a long process but eazy if you decide to go that route and have any ? pm me ill see if i can help. i did it on mine took half the day by my self.

Lafenatu , he would be shooting him sealf in the foot to go to a 165. I don't know why but he's dead set in an extreamly high reving motor. Not sure that the 185's ported and pollished will cut it. Im guessing he'll end up with some 205's in the future. He's taking his time and doing it right tho so it should be a wicked motor when done. Just not sure he can handel a motor like this lol.

Thanx rz . I always thought there was more to it than that. Had I know this b4 I may have done this to some of mine lol. I guessing i can pick up the tool from summit or jegs?

He's dead set on building a really high reving motor..

I sure hope it's not in a stock 302 block.

185s will clear a stock cam but still need to be checked regardless

best way to check ptv clearance is with a degree wheel and a dial indicator but clay is fine

as for the broken head studs. soak and heat. if you need to drill and timesert 5 holes i would be looking for a new block
