How do you drop the tank?

I have a leak somewhere between the gas cap and the intake. I have replaced all of the lines (except the hardline) between the tank, and the intake, and I still have that pressure leak.

I have a feeling that it is either a seal on the tank itself, or the fuel filler "neck" is cracked(my uncle said that is fairly common). So my first question is A) How do you drop the tank? and B) Where can I get new seals and a new fuel filler neck? I have found the seal for the fuel pump, but not for the orifice valve, or a new fuel filler neck anywhere.

Thanks guys.

Run it as dry as possible, then stick a floor jack uner it and unbolt the straps, lower it a bit, unhook the neck and lines, and drop it the rest of the way.

Late Model Resto might have the neck, I'm really not sure though.

I haven't found the neck anywhere. Don't really want to go to Ford just to get screwed with a huge price tag.

(Would you mind changing the avatar? A buddy of mine from a while back just committed suicide about a month ago, and though I would usually think something like that was funny it's hitting a soft spot right now.)

:dunno:

EDIT: Sorry, it's really not my place to tell someone what they should or shouldn't have as their avatar, and I do appreciate your answering my question.

I have not, but I would assume that any car with the same age would have a similar if not identical wear, since it isn't really wear and tear that affects that line as much as the environment. I'll have to take a look at it though.

I guess our filler necks are metal... :dunno: So that is no longer my concern. I guess I'll just pick up all the seals and grommets and hope for the best.

theres a rubber seal that goes around the entrance of the filler neck into gas tanks..

Its known for getting old and everytime you turn left gas will shoot out.

I replaced mine a while ago...pretty easy job.

Sounds like what it is .

It was like 20 bucks from ford.

Bought mine from the dealer (the only one in town with honest prices) and they said the cheapest I could get it was 38 bucks. :(

I decided to buy all of the gaskets for the tank just in case They were busted too, so that I didn't have to drop the tank more than once, but the 50 dollar price tag was pretty steep. I checked all over the internet, and though prices seem better, with shipping they would come out to about the same, and more once I return the Ford parts and get hammered with a restocking charge.

:wall:

All this for an uncertain "cure" to this leak problem. I'm gonna have to talk to the guy I'm buying this car from and make sure he plans on paying for all of these smog tests. It's getting ridiculous.

Just this past weekend I replaced the seal that connected the filler hose and fuel tank itself. If that is your leak though it should be pretty obvious just by looking under the car.

It should be obvious? I hope that it is these, because other than these gaskets and the lines I already replaced, I don't know where to turn for the leak of pressure when they put pressure on the tank.

So apparently you aren't supposed to lubricate it with engine oil. Even though that is what Chilton's manuals specifically say to use. I had a .039 leak when he put pressure on the tank, and you fail with .04 or above. I think he just wanted to get me out of there, but I won't complain. You can see that it is leaking already from that brand new grommet though... That makes me pretty mad. :wall:

It's all good. I'm alright for now. I will have to get around to replacing it with another one when I have the cash to drop another 40 bucks on a grommet.

so how hard was it to drop the cover?
i haven't done mine yet... kinda skeptical...

I didn't have to take the cover off, but I would assume that it is fairly simple to remove from the tank if you have to do anything to it at all.

The tricky part would be supporting the tank while you take the cover out from under it. Other than that, it should be as simple as putting it in place, and strapping the tank back up.
