Shoulbe be right around the mark u described. They arent easy to see this is why you need to be under the car and with a light too. Once u find 10 degrees btdc mark it with some whiteout. this will make it very easy to see.:  I would start with 10 and hopefully with the white mark and the clean balancer you will be able to see your adjustments when u turn the distributor.Grab ur timing light hookup the pwr supply to the battery - and + then run the pickup to the no.1 spark plug wire. (passenger side front =no. 1 plug)pull your spout connecetor which looks like a lil gray fuse( located right beside the air intake tube on the strut tower.start car allow it warm up fully, 1/2" wrench to loosen the distributor hold down bolt so the distributor will turn..turn the distributor til u get the desired setting, tighten down the bolt. reinstall spout, test drive and repeat as necessary. Some cars will take 16 degrees, mine pings at 10 lol.
