I will admit Im a newb, but i cant seem to figure out how everyone is able to set their timing .. on my balancer all i see is a little notch. I dont see any degree marks. Can someone please shed some light on how to actually set timing? What and where do i look to figure out where my timing is right now?

The little notch should be 0*, I think, if the outside ring didnt slip. I ended up marking mine again by using a degree wheel and re marking it with a file and a marker, using the file to cut new marks.

clean it...dirt and grease can easily hide the numers/marks on the balancer. They are there!

take a piece of sand paper or scotchbrite pad and rub the surface of the HB. the grooves for the timing marks will stay rusty and be easier to see

clean it and get under the car, u should see timing marks when you clean it for sure. Shoulbe be right around the mark u described. They arent easy to see this is why you need to be under the car and with a light too. Once u find 10 degrees btdc mark it with some whiteout. this will make it very easy to see.: I would start with 10 and hopefully with the white mark and the clean balancer you will be able to see your adjustments when u turn the distributor.

Grab ur timing light hookup the pwr supply to the battery - and + then run the pickup to the no.1 spark plug wire. (passenger side front =no. 1 plug)

pull your spout connecetor which looks like a lil gray fuse( located right beside the air intake tube on the strut tower.

start car allow it warm up fully, 1/2" wrench to loosen the distributor hold down bolt so the distributor will turn..
turn the distributor til u get the desired setting, tighten down the bolt. reinstall spout, test drive and repeat as necessary. Some cars will take 16 degrees, mine pings at 10 lol.

I think that about covers it. hope that helps
btw, i think you can buy timing tape at the parts store to go on the balancerif it honestly doesnt have marks but i bet ur just not seeing them.

Ya just clean up the balancer. I had to sand mine a bit to see the marks because of the rust. then i just marked each degree with a sharpie.

After I put a brand new balancer on mine, I bumped the timing up a bit, and even brand new the marks were difficult to see. I could only see them at a certin angle.

just start turning it, if it idles down ur going the wrong way. plus if u have the timing light on it u should be able to tell whether ur advancing or retarding.

Ive done it 100 times and I couldnt tell you honeslty which way for sure, lol.

use some chalk on the balancer and wipe it down after you scribe all the marks. the chalk will get stuck in the grooves. i used some of my kids sidewalk chalk for this and it worked like a charm!

OK I got a question. I can see a white mark on my balancer someone has made. What on the car do I referance these marks on the balancer to??? Is there a timing "post" somewhere on the block???? All I see is a little bracket off the block that has a round hole at the end. But not point or definate place to lin up marks?
