They are caused by movement between most likely two metal objects that should not be moving against each other, or wore out bushings and such. These are things that need attention. Using sound deadener so that you hear them less is equivalent to turning up your stereo so that you don't hear the rod knock in your engine.You will mostly likely still hear these noises. Sound deadener is for keeping outside noises outside, like wind, tire, and road noise. Squeaks and rattles that are within the metal structure of your car will still be heard.The improvement to the sound of your stereo is from the lack of outside noise interfering with the audio quality.
