It's Clutch Time

It's clutch time again, looking for some advice as to any other items I should look
to replace while I have the car apart. For starters the car is a mostly stock '94
GT with 235K on the clock, I drive the car 850 miles a week and don't intend on
racing it or adding significant HP any time soon.

I plan on replacing the factory quadrant and cable with one of the adjustable clutch
kits with a firewall adjuster. It appears everybody and their brother makes one of
these, recommendations on which brands I should look at would be appreciated?

As far as clutches go, should I really consider a King Cobra or Centerforce clutch, or
should I just go back to a generic stock replacement like I did last time? I got 135K
on the bumper to bumper clutch I put in the car.

Should I consider replacing the Throwout bearing retainer or the clutch fork? Is it worth
the time to have the flywheel machined, or should I just buy a new one?

Again any help would be appreciated,
Chris

I don't know about the firewall adjuster for just a daily driver. I heard from the mechanic who put one in my car that they are more throuble than they're worth if your not racing. The people I've talked to that have them always talk of how they have to adjust them all the time. i actually ordered one for my car but then decided against it.

As for the clutch, I've heard center force clutches are really good and easy to push down as well. I have the king cobra and if your driving all the time it's murder on your leg but for me it's perfect. i do good to drive my car 250 miles a week ex specially in the winter

hope this helps

I actually had a spec stage 1 in my car before and absolutely hated it. It bit down hard, but that thing was so god damn hard to push. I replaced it with a king cobra and I couldn't be happier. A king cobra really is the best deal for the money, centerforce's are really good, but cost a bit more.

Here's what I would do while the car is apart:

Stock replacement clutch
Throwout Bearing
Pilot Bearing
Resurface the flywheel

I would also check the main bearing retainer (it's the collar that the throwout bearing rides on) to make sure it is not galled up or damaged in any way. If it is, get a new steel one from Ford and install it.

I would NOT change the clutch quadrant if the factory one is still working well.

To my knowledge the factory clutch cable and quadrant are still in good working order. Are there
any symptoms of a bad clutch cable or quadrant?

If your engagement is still smooth, and all of the teeth on the factory quadrant are in good condition, there is absolutely no reason to replace it. They are self-adjusting and since this appears to be primarily just a driver for you, I can think of no reason why you should mess with it.

Oh yeah, thanks for the reminder 916 - you should definitely change your rear main seal while you're in there as well. :)

I resurfaced my flywheel, put it a new throwout bearing retainer, new throwout bearing, new pilot bearing, new clutch, new rear main seal, and i went ahead and replaced my driveshaft bolts while i was at it, because they were old, and had been under the car for 12 years, a little rusty, and they were only $5.
