Spent some time mapping cams again. I must admit a great level of tranquility when doing this. Its so peaceful!
Ive had the idea of swapping to 4v heads ever since the headgasket on my 5.4l 2v blew. I wanted to get actual 4valve open/close points on paper so that i could get the mathmatics figured out for a performance scenario. Lobe seperation and such....hold up. Let me explain.
The 4valve heads have 2 camshafts that operate the intake and exhaust seperatly. One cam for intake valves, one cam for exhaust valves. The biggest gain here is being able to alter lobe seperation angle. This angle is referenced from an imaginary center line from the exhaust open/close points and intake open/close points and the distance between these lines.
Its known that not much performance can be had by altering the intake valves operating points, but the exhaust is a different story.
Yes, more intake duration has performance benefits IF....you want to purchase new cams....but in this scenario we are utilizing what we have available on the cheap cheap! Ford factory parts!
Next post will be a big surprise! ...to the 4v community.
