well, there still is some things i need to fix up on my newly purchased 96 mustang GT before i get to mod the engine (new clutch, strut tower brace, stop some unkown annoying squeaking, get a radio, new stiffer sway bar) but when i finaly get there, im thinking my first step with a mod chip or ECU flash. we have this friend who used to be a test driver for ford in the 90's (including testing the mustang) and who told me that the GT's where extremly detuned at the time because the modular engine was relatively new and ford was not sure how durable it was at the time, adding, it has proven itself to be very durable. he then tells me I can get ridiculously high gains from the tuning and or chip (and using 93 octane) on all stock parts. He said that i may be able to get 280HP and
320TQ. OK im a noob, but that much of a gain just from a chip seems a little high to me. if he's right, im also concerned about keeping the reliability of my engine.

so can anyone confirm he's right
and does anyone have advice (such as what specifically to get.)

thank you

NPI= non PI head, intake, cams, what gave the 99-up Mustang 260 flywheel horsepower. Your car has 215 flywheel horsepower, on a chassis dyno, stone stock, with a chip, you'd be right around 180 rear wheel horsepower.

npi= non performance improved...on the 96-98 4.6

99-04 4.6 is PI

96-98 gt is 215 hp

99-04 260

You would be lucky to get 230 fly wheel horse with a tune...and maybe put 200 to the ground in a 5 speed...

for example...my car is a 96 gt with just about every bolt on made for it, long tubes, sct tuner, gears, pi intake, tb plenum cai. I dont think my car makes 280 horsepower with every mod and a pi intake..

Most people talk out their asses about mustangs cause they dont know anything about them. Even some of the great v6 owners....

I had a v6 owner tell me he had a 96 5.0 that was real fast......He has a 96 3.8....they never even made a 5.0 in 96...I just laughed at him and drove a way

The intake, get a PI intake and cams, you should be able to find then for around 150 for both. Then worry about a tune. Those mods with an exhaust and other bolt ons should get you close to 240-250 rwhp.

BTW most of us "flash tune" our car's, meaning we have handheld tuner's that can reprogram the stock ecu, again and agin, and our whim. SCT and Diablosport are two good product's to look into.

No problem dude, it's why we're here, we all had to learn.

By intake I mean lower intake, the upper's are the same, and the throttle body. You don't need a lift or anything fancy to do an intake, cams you would need a floor jack and stands. It should only take you a weekend tops, there is a tutorial stickied in this forum on the swaps and what they entail.

right now im reading truth about NPI vs PI. i still dont know where i would get these parts and buying stuff from forum members seems a little sketch, especially for the amount of money.

also, by lower intake, that's the intake manifold right.

Trust me dude, when someone on the forums scams someone, we all go on a crusade. Somone scammed someone on Pirate4x4 and it made friggin Dateline, nobody let go until that kid gave up the cash.

Most people are good though, I've never had a problem myself, but even from Summit Racing the PI intake is under 200 bucks, and you can get the cams from any 99-up Ford at the junkyard.

Lower intake is the actual intake manifold. The pleunum, also refered to as a elbow, is the same on all 2 valve motors, along with the throttle body.

so how does a purchasing procedure normaly go, i know i will pay, but i dont if i will get the item.

also yeah, just checked out summit racing, and a pi intake costs 204, for 2001-2003 production intake manifold.

Ive also been trying to find ajunkyard in my area. trying to look it up on yellow books .com hasnt helped (guess i could look in the yellow pages).

280 flywheel hp with just a tune...interesting :)

my stock auto dyno'd 180 :( and 5 sp's are usually @ 190rwhp and i'm guessing a tune would get you 5-10rwhp at best...one of the best mods to do is swap out the factory mid pipe as its very restrictive...i've seen 10rwhp gains by just doing that.

did you get those emblems yet?

i'd give it a few more days, i mailed it regular USPS in a regular envelope so it should be in soon. It takes mail from me to my granny in North Florida about 6-7 days so you should be getting them any day.
