I drove my 67 Mustang back up to school and the trip went fine but once I got here, my starter (or at least I thought my starter) took a dump on me and now I can't fire it up. First thing I did was replace the power wire running from the solenoid to the starter as the one I had on there was old and pressed right up against the long tube headers so I figured the heat got to it and figured that I needed to replace it anyways so I'd start there. That didn't work so I bought a new solenoid because it was cheap and at the time, I didn't think I was going to be able to get the starter off with the longtubes in the way. That didn't change anything so I gave it rest and came back this morning to try and finangle the top bolt off the starter. Managed to get it off, took it in, swapped it for a new one, installed it, and same thing. There was a note on the starter saying to replace the solenoid at the same time so I figured it wouldn't hurt to try one more solenoid, thinking that maybe the old starter had fried the new solenoid as well. So another new solenoid and nothing. So right now, it's got a new solenoid, new wire, new starter. The battery is fine, charged, and even throwing on jumper cables will not change anything. Pretty much when you turn the key, you get one loud click and that's it. I thought that was a tell-tell sign of the solenoid but with the brand new one doing it as well, I'm either wrong, or I've got something else killing my solenoids. I REALLY don't want to take it in to the shop because I feel like it as to be something simple and I'd hate to throw away the money on a tow and then labor with shops I don't know or trust.
To sum it up- New starter, new wire from solenoid to starter, new solenoid -> Car will not crank, will not turn over. When you turn the key, there is a loud click, coming from the solenoid I believe, and that's it.
