This comes up periodically, especially in more active/less permanent groups so I figured I should make sure it's posted somewhere with better long term search potential.
As far as I can tell from online exhaust calculators and other discussions a single 2" straight pipe is barely enough for the horsepower a stock 3.8 is rated.. so pretty much any effort at all to uncork it is going to make a difference.
This change alone to my stock 96 before doing anything whatsoever under the hood repeatably and consistently cut my 0-60 times by 0.9 seconds, being conservative. In combination with raising my rev limit to 5600 rpm with a tuner it dropped by a repeatable, consistent and conservatively stated 1.2 seconds vs stock.
