Okay so my 96' GT burns oil (no surprise) as all of ours probably has at some point. I just pulled the spark plugs and none of them had oil on them, they were all in good shape, no signs of preignition or glaze. I was convinced that my valve seals are worn considering I've been told that's a known issue with the 4.6's. I really really REALLY hope its not worn rings

Mine does the same thing (5.0L though) but its only at high rpms. Is yours doing it while idling and acceleration??

Mine only burns oil when its sat idling for a few minutes, once I give it a tap on the gas it blows out a puff of smoke and then thats it. Never blows smoke under acceleration.

Hmm could very well be valve stem seals. Mine does it only when it is warmed up and only when I get to higher rpm's. I have the seals to replace them but I havent done it yet.

My 88' GT did the same thing yours does, I never got around to fixing it. It's embarrassing as hell sometimes I think when people see my car smoke that they think its a P.O.S.

Yup I hear yo on that, I remember when I was driving one day in my 88' and a guy and he girl pulled up to me at a gas station telling me my car had blew a bunch of smoke in their faces. But hey I'd rather have worn seals that bad rings, worn seals you just need to make sure you've got enough oil, bad rings will ruin your motor if you continue to drive it

Mine eats some oil, but I have no smoke. It is actually running into my intake through the PCV piping. My fix, homemade oil catch can.

Yeah its a known issue. I have the same problem on mine on super hot days in the summer idling for than a few minutes. I'm actually debating on putting a little bit of lucas synthetic oil stabilizer but I haven't done it. What is everyone guys thoughts?

It keeps a small film of oil everywhere in the engine. It prevents dry starts, and most of all keeps you from burning oil if you have serious problem. The older non-synthetic bottle people disregarded because it only changed the oil in your car to heavier weight by adding that product to it. I never really tried it, but will too just because the valve seals are showing its wear. The puff of blue smoke after long storage, or in the summer when the motor reaches hot operating temperatures, this could stop it.

The Viton valve seals are only 17 bux through Napa if you want to go ahead and pick em up. Like i said, I did I just havent had time to change em.

Its not a tough job. There's 2 ways of going about it and they are:
1) Pull the heads
2) Use an air fitting to keep the valves up and remove spring while heads are still attached

Iam removing my heads to do mine. They won't take very long but it is a tediousjob. If it weren't for trickflows CRAP seals I wouldn't be doing this at all.

I did it once with an air compressor. Replaced the timing chain and water pump at the same time that day. Older Mustang it was, an '88-
I would invest in a catch can, give it a serious Seafoam treatment, and consider a slight change in oil weight. I don't know if you usually run 5W or use synthetic or not. Mobil1 High Mileage worked for me in the past to eliminate oil consumption. Update us, I wanna know. I've got the thought of purchasing another Mustang soon. I would love to have an older Cobra.
