overheating

Well its one problem after another, first my alternator went on me. Now the car started to overheat, it starts to shoot boiling water out of the overflow tank and the temp gauge seems to be off it doesnt even mark normal yet its boiling. Im thinking it might be a head gasket cause i just replace the thermostat, and my moms car had done the same and it turned out to be the gasket. Any suggestions on what it could be? thanks

mine does it occasionally! so I dont know if it's the headgasket or not! I def hope it's not, but if it is I will do new head's at the same time, it'll be a good chance to upgrade the head's since they will have to come off for the new headgasket replacement...

Thats what i was thinking of doing too, but would also like some recommendations for which heads though cause im kinda short on cash and would rather buy some bare heads and throw the valves from the old heads on till i can afford to upgrade!

Radiator, insufficient water pump volume, head gasket, the possibilities are endless.

Just start checkin everything.

My understanding of most WP's is that they typically only go bad once they show signs of leaking.

how about getting some radiator flush before you buy a pump. there is a chance of opening up a can of worms when changing out the WP. (broken/rusted, stuck bolts) if it ain't leaking don't mess with it.
With the car running and the rad cap is off do you see bubbles in the coolant?

Nope no bubbles, and i wanted to just upgrade the pump since mine looks kinda corroded but its not leaking just wanting to upgrade anyway and rule that out. But im also looking into the fan, how does it work. when i start the car it turns on but after letting it warm up it turns off, which leads to overheating and it doesnt seem to turn back on? I gotta friend who installed a manual on/off switch today and it still overheated, so im pretty much hoping to get some info on here, then if not just take it to a local mechanic to get it checked out. Thanks guys

the fan should not kick on till needed. not at start up. I'm not on what temps, maybe 180* and 200*. the hi speed is supposed to kick on whenever the a/c is turned too.

That's what I don't get it turns on at start up, then after warming up it shuts off and doesn't turn back on so we ran the switch and it still overheating. And my temp guage is off so I'm just frustrated cause its one thing after another with it. Thanks for all your help guys
