I just got a 1987( i think) EFI Motor gave to me, I was wanting to tear down the motor and rebuild it before dropping it into my 1994 GT, during tare down i found that it has the flat top pistons not the valve relief piston like a H.O has. I was wondering if there is any aftermarket heads that will work with these pistons? Everyone that i have asked says that i have to have valve reliefs, but that can't be true, would regular performer 302 heads work? what are some after market heads that would work with flat top pistons. I'm not going to run a very big cam either if one at all. Just want to build a cheap lil 302 for a every day car.

The block wasn't from an 87 then must have been from 85 or 86, iirc 87's had forged pistons with valve reliefs.

If your "tearing it down" why not bore it to a 306 and get new pistons? :dontknow:

I agree.

Put a fresh motor in it. It may not even have to be bored depending on how the block looks.

would like to bore it but kinda defeats the word cheap build, is there any heads that will work with the pistons?

Twistwedge heads will give you the most clearance.
I agree with the others if it's out of the car take it to a machine shop and get it bored. Then throw some forged slugs in it. Call around and do some price comparison, you can save a lot by shopping around.

A bore and new pistons will get you past all the headaches of: will it, wont it fit. Or you can find pistons from a 87-93 fox for 50 bucks or so on craigslist or local racing boards.
