Ok so i was a little bored one day so i decided to mess around with my exhaust on my 96gt. I cut the exhaust pipe off just back from the factory headers. It was really loud yes but since it wasn't runnin through my flows it sounded like crap. I took it out for a test drive and i loved how loud it was but didn't like the sound. It felt like i even lost power too. So my question is since my exhaust was flowing more freely why did i lose power wouldn't i have gained a little? P.S. Don't worry i welded my exhaust back up so it's back to normal now. ^-^

Backpressure is really just a myth..... my cars run 1 sec. faster in the 1/4 with open headers. Hell, look at any NHRA car, espically the Top Fuel cars, they have absolutley NO back pressure.

On a stock car, w/o LT headers, it is most likely the motor losing some torque, but mainly because your CPU is trying to figure out WTF you just did to it!! :hammer:

Yeah, that may be true? I am used to dealing with 400+hp all day. I would never run open headers unless it was strictly a DRAG CAR anyways, just too obscene IMHO

open headers= :puke:

i agree. Its sounds loud as hell, but it sounds like a freight train. Not good at all. I actually thought i damaged my motor once i started my car up with open headers while installing one of my midpipes lol. Damn, it sounds like complete sh!t :puke: :puke: :puke:

From what I was taught at mmi, unless youre racin, you dont need open headers. Open headers (drag pipes)run great on harleys because they are low cam, pushrod, low compression strokers, basically like an old SBC but the secret there is we run torque cones at the top of the pipe where it connects to the heads to help with the pressure. On the newer cars you need some type of equalization. I.E. an x pipe or h off road ofcourse. That equalization will help out your daily driver motor to run better and wont throw codes if you get the mil eliminators. Open head would work great on a fully built track car. Not only that but what does an obnoxious car get you? The attention you dont want from cops especially if you have illegal tint or somethin like that (noise ordinence) I got that ticket. They look for that, trust me my friends are cops... :police:

Open headers are only good when you are at WOT, other then that your car is losing a good bit of torque and that takes away the drivability of it.

For future reference, please do a little bit of research before you make such a drastic modification without knowing what principles and physics comes into play. Tech articles in magazines are an excellent source, but you might want to stay away from the really thick ones with 100 pages of advertising. You can tell where their heart is.
