I'm going to replace the stock cassette/tuner with a cd combo and I was wondering if you all had any suggestions? I was looking at this unit
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16882117216

Where can I buy a tray or something to stick where the old cd player was? I know I can buy the gauge cluster for there but thats kinda worthless to me I would rather just have a tray or keys and junk.

Alpine or get out… j/k, Pioneer makes some ok stuff but I've never dug it. You won't know if you like it till you get it and experiment w/ other brands.

I did, What made it a little more difficult for me is I'm using all stock equipment except for the radio itself that I want to replace. I'm not looking for a performance setup. Just something as good as the stock unit is fine with me.

I'm running a Sony X-Plod head unit and I really like it. Sounds a lot better than the old radio that was in the car, (which I assume was better than stock).
Seems like they don't have it anymore, but it was basically like this one.
http://www.xplodsony.com/xplod/headunits/CDX-GT420U but mine also has an iPod Jack that runs to the glove box.

As for the box, I would look around to find someone who owns a wrecking yard. All the OEM parts I get are from a guy who lives near me who just gives me stuff off Mustangs that are being parted out. If there is a Craigslist for your area, I would do a search for "Mustang Parting" and see if there are any hits from MY 94-00, then you can just email them and see if they still have the box. That's how I got mine. 10 bucks. ;)

Good luck!

I picked up a tray from my local audio shop for 15 bucks. Just ask for a tray to fit a single DIN slot, most shops should have one for cheap. Also, you can pick up a wiring harness from walmart for like 7 bucks that will make hooking up your stereo a hell of alot easyer. You can only use the power one but its fairly simple for the speakers, because fords wiring harness is weird so its hard to trace the wires, especially when you have the dual decks. Just plug the power one in and wire it up to the harness that came with your new stereo and then take the speaker wires from your new stereo harness and stick them into the slots of the stock harness for the speakers. I think its top right and mid upper right are one then lower right and mid lower right are another etc... Just switch it around untill the sound is coming out of the right speakers, thats how I did my setup before I switched to an external amp for my door speakers, its pretty simple just takes a little trial and error.

when you buy a the new radio, also pick up Metra radio harness 70-5511. this plugs into your stock harness, and then you just color match the wires from this harness to your new radio and you'll be all set.

all i know is when i replaced my headunit i put in an alpine head unit and did the plug in wiring thing. I do believe they have problems with the mach 460 b/c it wasn't sending the same power to all the speakers even though it was wired right and balanced.... ? shit i don't know.

just to let you know if you have the mach 460 system your amps for the factory speakers wont power up.
Does anyone know how to get the to work with a aftermarket deck.

I had a Alpine cda-9835 and it was the best deck I ever had

im actually looking into the whole amps not working thing for my car right now, trying to install a newer mach460 radio into my current mach460 setup. if you ask me, after looking at the wiring diagrams, the amps draw their power from the battery, headunit. seems to me that the only part they share with the headunit (aside from the audio signal) is the ground.

if anyone else has any info on this, i would appreciate it. as far as i can tell, the amps are getting power in my setup.

If you order your head unit from Crutchfield.com they will send you the pocket and wire harness for free.

Hey X, install some of those crappy sounding LoudMouths and you wont be able to hear your radio so it wont matter if the amps are working or not.
