So I never thought I would care enough to upgrade the audio system in the mustang but I have been driving it alot more lately and with as loud as the exhaust is on this thing I need speakers that can over power it a little better.

My mustang is the non mach audio version so its already got a big disadvantage. My question is what would be a cheap set of speakers to get for this thing that will give off good tone. I like having a little bass but nothing crazy.

I don't care how good my side exhaust sounds I gotta have my tunes as well... Not having the mach is good thing now as it makes it easier to install what ever you want with out extra wiring. Replacing the stock speakers will make a huge improvement in sound as well as a new deck if the stock stereo is still in it. You can add a small sub/amp if you want more bass but I would start with the deck and 4 to see if you want more.

There are plenty of low cost options that are way better than the stock paper cones. Luckily we have pretty basic speaker sizes and you should not have any trouble.

Scott is a big audiophile but even he knows the stock speakers can be easily outdone by modern $50 speakers. Single din decks have come down in price significantly as well and offer huge improvements over stock.

Infinity makes great speakers at a low price. Pair them with a smal decent amp, infinity also makes inexpensive amps that will sound great. Pioneer makes really reliable radios with tons of features and great sound for cheap.

Now with all of this it's key to remember audio is like your paint. It's all about proper prep work and correct finishing materials. Cheap rca cables will not transfer great sound and are prone to introducing ground noise and such. Don't cheap out on the size of the of the power wires to the amp. You'll thank me later for telling you this now.

Scott will have other info to toss in as well. There is obviously much better equipment to put in but if your trying to keep a low budget this should help you get U started.

Thanks everyone. I got an old aftermarket headunit in the car I had in my old mustang like 7 years ago lol. I probably wont do a sub as this is more of a track oriented car and would rather keep the weight down. I'm thinking some decent front and rear speakers paired with a small amp to push them? I used to buy my audio stuff off of Sonic Electronix or Crutchfield. Both of the websites are giving me two different speaker sizes. 6x8 or 5 1/4?

As I recall we have 6x8 speakers. The funny looking ovals.

Since I want basically what you want, something a little better than stock, updated, but want to keep the weight down - I would probably not even add an amp.

This is just me but I know todays head units are a lot better than say 20 years ago when our cars were being pumped out of the factory. I know todays speakers are a lot better. Skipping the amp and just using the head-unit I think there would still be an improvement over stock, it would be simpler and weigh less which are all ideal on a track oriented setup.
