So popped a code today, P1740. Supposedly a TSS shorted open. Confirmed by shifting auto shifter to "2" and car immediately stalls. How big of a PITA is this gonna be? Anyone ever change one and have tips? I have an extractor vac so I can suck out the pain before unbolting it.

I believe that is definitely worth taking out the transmission and going through it completely

It s on its way out
I had a relative that had that same exact problem
About 2 months later it went sour
Would not shift into gears like it should

We ended up just getting a rebuild traded
Who knows how long yours will go
I dont want to jinx it for
Take care of it sooner than later

Well, I'm suing the PO for lying to me about the head gasket. Court date is 9/23/22. If I win, I might just part this sh!+box out. Car is super nice, just seems like a lemon.

I would get a book for that shift silinoid for that transmission
Study it and take it apart take your time
Pay attention to what is being taken apart
Take pictures even mark it
Just so you can put it back together

A new solenoid is like $25. They say it's a common failure.

what happened to the head gasket? Unless you have it in writing that he installed it and it is new and installed perfectly suing for an as-is sale +20yr old car even if you win, will probably be hard to collect.

I did my first trans in my garage on jackstands last year. It can be done with some help.

What vehicle are you referring to, Sn95 or New Edge?

I have had the valve body out of my aode (almost the same as a 4r70w) couple of times and also the valve body for a 5r55e several times. They are not difficult to remove.

Have alot of info on the aode/4r70w, some of which may be of interest to you.

The old tccoa site has a ton of info on this trans as does the crown vic site.

Any idea when the trans was last serviced? (if ever)

How clean does the fluid look? Use a clean white cloth or tissue, wipe the fluid from the dipstick and observe. Any specks of material of any colour?

The TCC and the shift solenoids are bolted to the valve body and therefore V/B removal is not necessary to change the TCC, but there very well could be gunk/crap inside the v/b circuits that are creating the issue.

I have done vac n fill 2x on this Stang since I got it. Less than 500 miles driven. Fluid is bright and clear. Used Valvoline Mercon V getting out about 4 full qts each time.

Clearly that solenoid has failed "open" as putting the shifter into 2 is an instant stall just like the screenshot above says.
