timing questions

Working with my 95 gt. I've got afr165 heads, mild cam, and the other bolt on norms. What is a good baseline for the timing. I've noticed when i get lower than 12degrees The thing will load up and back fire when revving. Any ideas.

Mines set at 14 degrees, i've got simlar heads with bolt on's, but with the standard cam.
It runs really well once it warms up, its just a bit rich until then.
