I'm looking to get a new alternator and got to thinking if I get one I should get a higher amp one as well as some u/d pulleys. What amperage should I look into so I don't get that low charge or discharge I hear comes with the pulleys?

The U/D pulley kits comes with a U/D crank pulley and over drive alternator and waterpump pulley, so you'll be good to go. Now I had U/D pullies on my 5.0 till I put the KB on, and I had no charging problems with the stock alternator, however the added demands from my stereo system, and the stock one crapping out caused me to get the 210 amp polished power masters alternator, and that thing is awesome, in both quality and looks.

How many amps do our stock ones pump out?

I don't use UD pulleys. I had 2 sets, 1 on my old 90 LX and another set on this 95 and both sets killed my alternator.

No thanks.

They are rated at 130a but most put out more.

Only when spun at the appropriate speed, which UD pulleys will not do.

The problems with alternators typically come at low RPM. Larger alternator (e.g. a 200 amp) may not produce significantly more amperage than a 130 amp alternator at lower rpms. Ergo, upgrading to a 200 amp may not make much of a difference when you really need it.

Also, spending hundreds of dollars to upgrade to a huge alternator and larger wiring in order to make a "cheap" mod work well seems pretty counterintuitive to me. :dontknow:

It makes sense now, why spend around $300 on the alt and $100 on the pulleys for 5-10 hp tops. Those $400 could go into something more productive
