I know its had some head work but don't know if they had to shave the heads or not but if they did "which i think likely" it may be that the reason for the spark knock there is also a thing that looks like the spout connector I think it is just between the strut tower and the firewall that you can pull and it will drop a couple of degrees off the timing. if you want to check it that way.
