So yesterday I was checking out my friends 96GT while he did some work, and I noticed his intake has the aluminum crossover. I'm assuming that since his car has higher mileage, that at some point in time before he owned it, the all plastic intake cracked like they typically do, and it was replaced. What I am wondering, is that when Ford would replace these intakes on the 4.6's, did they replace them with the PI intake with the aluminum crossover, or are they still NPI intakes w/ the aluminum crossover? My thought was that only the PI intakes had the aluminum crossover. My friend also gets way better gas mileage out of his car, and I've noticed his car sounds a little different (and he still has stock exhaust)
Does anyone know for sure?

ford replaced them with the NPI style intake manifolds with an aluminum crossover, but it is possible if he bought the car used that the previous owner did the PI intake swap

Gotcha. I found out my friend who helps me with all my hotrod chevy stuff, knew the original owner of my friends car. So knowing that he had something to do with the car, its probably definitely the PI intake..

easy way to spot a PI vs NPI is the first intake runner.

on a PI it will go to the drivers side and on a NPI it will go to the passenger side.
