So I'm TRYING to get my 98 Auto to a 5spd. My best friend has a 99 cobra with his stock tranny sitting in his garage. I priced out the kits to get it switched over, however; I've been told I need a 1998 5spd ECU, it can't be a 97-96 blah blah, has to be a 98 because they did something weird to their computers. If anyone knows where I can get one for cheap (used?) that would be very helpful. Thanks guys

www.car-part.com

I just did a quick search and found about 20 ranging in price from 75 bucks to 200 bucks. Do a search there and you'll find what your looking for.

I don't see why you would need a new ECU? I thought the autos in these cars weren't even electronic anyways, but besides, you are going to a manual, so is there some other reason besides the transmission controls to swap ecu's?

Greggerex,

Thanks, but those are all for the v6. When I searched on Ebay, I got the same thing, all for the v6. Thanks though!

Jrgunn - Need a new ecu because my ecu will try to shift it for me. The ecu will think it's still an auto, that's why. Kinda sucks.

Thats what I thought, but two places said I needed a different "PCM", not ECU. I think I'm just gonna buy a new one.

there full of bull shiiaatt. Not sure if your familiar with 5.0s, but a A9L is stock for a 5 spd, and A9P is for a automatic. Normally if you go from a automatic to 5spd, you can use the computer no problem, but if you go from 5 spd to automatic, you have to change it. Thats the rules with 5.0s, and these cars arent really any different. Realize if your transmission harness has the plugs for automatic, and you swap in a stick, which will just use reverse lights and a couple solenoids, those shift wires will be inopperable. 5spd swap cars havent ever had a problem with a using the stock computers.

My guess is that it's different than the 5.0... I actually even called a dealership and they said the same thing, especially since it's a 98 (I was told it's the "bitch year".

I have a 98 5 sp computer that came with my Ford Racing Supercharger, you would need to have it reflashed to make the timing and injectors work with your application but that isn't hard with a handheld tuner etc... Its brand new and ill sell it cheap if you need it...shoot me a PM if interested. :)

Hey Darkcrime... Sorry I overlooked this thread so long. Look no further, I have a stock 1998 GT 5-speed ECU and the Passive Anti-Theft box that goes with it that came out of my car. I have the FRPP computer in there now that already has a chip programmed for it so I will probably never need my stock one. I PM'd you, let me know if you're interested.
