which cam should i get?

ok so i have a 94 gt. all internals are stock and i plan on putting on a set of gt-40 heads before the cam. which cam should i get that is fairly priced. i was looking at some ford racing cams but some of them said i might have to get different pistons bacause it wont clear.

my buddy just rebuilt hit motor in his 94 he went with an e-303 cam, edlebrock victor jr heads, and rpm II manifold and i think he made 365 hp to the wheels. he also only had like 45 thousand miles on his motor but the bottom end was stock.

what about the pistons? did he have after market pistons.....because i dont know if mine come stock with the notches to clear the valves

The 94-95 5.0L pistons, if I recall correctly had slightly larger valve reliefs in the pistons compared to the pistons used in the older 5.0s....

I know you can get away with using something like the E-cam and a set of Edelbrock Performers (1.90/1.60) without having to enlarging the valve reliefs further on the 94-95 cars...The GT-40s have slightly smaller valves...

Besides lift, duration and cam timing also play a big factor in terms of valve to piston clearance...

unless the 60 year old lady that bought it brand new re-built it then its stock, cause i never built the bottom end of it, the car was bone stock with 30,000 miles on it when i got it

yes as long as you use stock rockers or 1.6 roller rockers

With custom cams you don't have to worry about "lift and all" that's what these guys specialize in and that is what they will figure out. You only need to be able to provide them with information on your setup. Many have forms for you to fill out so you know what info to provide. The grinder will make the cam to work with your setup, giving you an optimized cam instead of an off the shelf one size fits all cam. That's the beauty of it, you don't have to worry about clearances, etcetera, that's done for you.

I'm not sure on pricing though, that's something you would have to take up with the grinder. IMO this is the only way to go. I'm not sure of what you are planning to do, but if you plan on spending money on the car why would you not spend the extra coin on the piece of equipment that controls the intake and exhaust events of your motor?

The only stock pistons I have ever seen like that were in the 1986 E6 HO engine . All of the later 302's had valve reliefs .

What year is your motor?
If it's a 94 then you have hydraulic roller lifters.
Ford switched from flat tappet lifters sometime in the 80's if I'm not mistaken.
