what year/model ranger? Different year's/models had different rear's but no matter what, It wont be a direct replacement. With some minor modification it will fit and vice-versa

The axle itself will not work, because of the Ranger having leaf springs and Mustangs having coils. Unless you can fabricate and weld. However as long as you still have a 28 spline rear end, the gears should work since 99% of Rangers have a 28 spline rear end. With the exception of 01+ FX4 Level II's which have a 31 spline rear end. All Ranger axle's are still drums in the rear, there just are 2 different size rear drums ( which doesn't matter in your case ). All are the same width and everything.

Totally forgot about the drum brakes

It's not really worth the hassle to do it(unless you can fab and weld like stated before). Most rangers have 7.5 rears anyways. If it's an 8.8 rear then you should be able to swap gears if that's the reason you're getting it, im not 100% sure on that though. I swapped my BII's 7.5 to a mustang 8.8 i got for free, total PITA! I did get rear disc brakes out of it though...

What's wrong with the rear you have now?

I won't say it's 'hard' but it can be quite time consuming with checking the backlash and making sure that the gears are making the correct contact pattern. Make sure to get a master install kit as well!
