What do you guys think?

Been thinking I may be interested in trading the Stang for a Focus hatch with an auto come fall (the wife needs to be able to drive it unfortunately otherwise I may be looking at a 2013 ST but then again I'd rather not be lumped in with the "sport compact" crowd so I'd be looking at an SEL or Titanium). I live and work in the middle of the city so the manual in the Stang hasn't even been as fun as it can be, since I'm just doing stoplight to stoplight in traffic all the time...feel like it would be a lot more fun in the suburbs where I could open it up a bit more and have some more fun, so looking at auto models if I trade since the Focus would be just a commuter anyway. The other driving force here is I don't really want to put any money into the Mustang; I don't want it to end up being another car that I dump a shitload of money into every three months and ultimately end up tying so much money up in it that it would forever seem stupid to sell because I'd never want to sell it after making a major repair, but I'd also want to sell it when it ran good rather than waiting for it to have something broken and take a big loss on a sale. The car runs great for now, but I just turned 90k miles Friday. Been there done that where you dump a bunch of money into it to the point it seems stupid to sell and that cycle sucks since you end up feeling trapped with the car. The other driving force here is that I'm just ready to move the fuck on from having 15 year old cars as daily drivers. I want something new with a warranty that I don't have to ever worry about, with a budgetable payment rather than a huge surprise repair bill every so often. I just feel like I'm ready to be done with old cars for DDs.

So, that said, what do you guys think of these little cars? I'm starting to like them more and more and they seem to rank as one of the best small cars on the market. They seem to have a hell of a lot of features for such a little car.

EDIT: The one thing I think really sucks though--and this happens with lots of new cars--is that now you have all this XM/Sirius/HD radio or Ford SYNC/MyTouch which is all technology shit that probably requires software updates and worst of all requires monthly subscription shit after a while. I know Ford comps the My Ford Touch service for three years but then after that you have to pay a subscription fee? Christ the car payment itself is enough, who wants to pay a bill to use the dashboard in the car? Another reason Americans are broke, every damn gadget/thing has a bill associated with it nowadays.

tell me more

kinda sucks i can't get a titanium in race red

Well I can't say too much since I was riding, not driving.. But between my mom's 05 base Accord and the Titanium Focus there's no comparison. The ride was very smooth and comfortable, but with relatively little body roll. As far as handling goes, it was very good, but not what i'd consider "sporty". It was a bit soft for me to be called sporty. The interior was also exceptionally tricked out. I personally love the center console/dash etc. The Ford navigation(whatever it's called) is very easy to use and I can envision my non-tech savvy self using it. All of the materials inside felt very high quality and of all of the cars i've looked at in car shows the last couple years i'd put it up there near the top. As far as power, it was decent from what little I could tell, though nothing to write home about.

Overall, i'd consider it a very good DD car and trip car. If you're looking for a sport compact i'd personally look at the ST or a Subie. If I already had a sports car i'd definitely pick this as a second vehicle.

Nacho, I am actually thinking the same way you are. Some bad stuff happened to me recently partially the cars fault and my stupidity along with it. So I decided next year I'm going to trade it in. I was looking at a Focus as well. Not a Titanium though but maybe SEL. I honestly think it is a great choice and it is more practical and has a sort of sporty look too. Better gas as well. I too am not a fan of those XM/Siruis/MyTouch things but seems like you can't get past them.

Have you considered a Ford Escape, they have this ecoboost thing that is suppose to get you better gas mileage. I was looking into them too. Otherwise if I could really swing it I would get a Jeep Cherokee or Ford Edge/Explorer. Depends on the job but the Mustang is definitely going.

My Mom has a new 2012 Focus hatch in SEL trim and it's fun for sure, but IMO, it's a little on the small side - my choice would be the current Fusion as it's just right in terms of size, cost and fuel economy. My Mom paid ~22k for her car and my (company car) Fusion SE listed at 24.5k, but have seen many sweet deals being that the Fusion is changing for 2013. The Fusion is very tight and actually fun to drive with a very large trunk - please check it out, - the sweet spot is an SE with moon and tune package. I'm getting 27mpg + right now in very mixed driving and plenty of power with the large 2.5L I4 and 6sp. auto.

As for the Sync, it's at least 3 years for the sync service - and it doesn't go away, just some of the extra services if it actually does. The dealership told us that they think it will just continue at the 3 year mark. Good luck with your decision as it really is a personal decision. My Mom loves her Focus and I'm lovin' the Fusion.

I was also kind of set on an SEL hatch but then when I realized I could get cloth in the Titanium and when I went to look at them today, I realized I like the Titanium better but I can't get Race Red or Oxford White and I don't care to pay $500 to get Platinum White if I can help it. I didn't realize the Tuxedo Black was metallic black which is sweet, but I've had two black cars and one metallic black, I'm done with black. I think for a DD cloth is easier to deal with since all I have to do is vacuum it and maybe steam it once a year, whereas with my leather I feel like every time I clean it I have to use leather cleaner and conditioner which is a pain in the ass. I'm really looking for a low maintenance car in terms of color and interior, one that I can feel ok with just running through the automatic touchless wash like the rest of the world and worrying about other things, rather than always trying to be so anal like with my Mustang. I just want something I can drive without worry or unexpected expense, and run through the was every couple weeks and vacuum out once in a while and leave it at that. Something easy. I'd like a Titanium hatch with winter package, mudflaps, and moonroof and that'll do.

One thing to keep in mind is that for 2013 they are dropping the SEL trim level, so I think resale will end up sucking on 2012 SELs since in a few years the road will be full of Titaniums. Because of that I'm hoping they put Race Red as an option on the Titanium. When the hell are the 2013s going on sale? I can't find info for that anywhere except for the ST. It's gotta be really soon.

I did get my first look at the 2013 Escape in person today, those are NICE as shit...buuuut, I'm not much of an SUV guy and if I were I'd want a higher trim one which pushes around $30k which I just can't/won't do at this point in time. Really nice trucks though. The dealer had about 70 of the 2012s, those are going to be a hard sell with the sleek 2013s out.

The 2013 Fusion looks a lot like an Aston and I think it's a really nice car, but more car than I'm looking for. I don't mind small cars at all to tool around downtown in. Plus, I'd end up wanting the higher trim anyway and then I'm getting close to base GT territory. I even flirted with the idea of a Fiesta, but I just can't see shelling out $20k for one of those tin cans.

I'd like to trade the GT while it's still worth something, clean retail is $5200 which takes care of the tax and a couple grand downpayment on a new ride. The only real reservation I have with getting a new car is that I have off street parking for now (no garage though) but as soon as the wife gets a car in the fall she gets that spot and my shit will be out on the street which really sucks.

As for all that My Touch crap, I'd like to know how much the subscription fee is after three years. If it's like $20 a year, fine, but if it's like $20 a month, F that.

A buddy of mine purchased a 2012 Focus Hatch. I took it for a drive and it was much better than I expected. Everything felt light and firm as far as body panels and doors go. The interior is nice too. If I were in the market for something new I would be looking into one of these.

i would like that titanium handling package since it comes with the nice 5 spoke 18s but you get stuck with summer tires...maybe the dealer would be willing to work something out and swap out the pilot sport 3s for a set of decent all seasons and a little credit

When I totaled my Ranger back in 2010 I had a brand new focus for a rental for a few days. I really liked it a lot and if was not for the STI falling in my lap I probably would have got one

The new focus is great, a friend on mine bought one last October, the Titanium Hatch in white. He has no complaints about it at all. As far as gas mileage he said $50 (in Canada, so more like $35 for you Americans) gets him 500 km's in city (350 ish miles) on the highway it's even better. Cool car for sure, comfortable, and the 160 hp isnt too bad either. I'd say go for it.
