Trick Flow kit is hard to beat for the money.

I say the TFS kit OR a used S-Trim

get the twisted wedge heads also.if you can find a used vortech they work great boosted

Wow, I've read good things on the kits from BGturbo over on turbomustang forums. Didn't know you could do a kit on these for that cheap. OF course, after changing the plugs on this car a few wks ago I'm not sure how you could shoehorn all that in the engine bay -it's pretty snug in there!

N/A though its hard to beat the TFS top end package

Keep in mind if your looking to spend $2500, budget for $3000.

Nothing ever goes 100% perfect.

For that kind of money, I would give Jay Allen a call at Camshaft Innovations and let him put a combination together for you that will outperform the TrickFlow kit. You can save some money for other things maybe but I gurantee you will not be disappointed.

I think that would be ideal. or a used vortech on the stocker

The TFS kit is pretty mild. I have the Street Burner kit on my car with a stock air intake, 70mm TB, and 24lb injectors and put 260 rwhp with the ignition breaking up so bad it wouldn't even rev past 4200 rpm without a tune. Personally I wanna get rid of mine. I want more power and the kit I have just isn't gonna be able to make the power I want. But for what it sounds like you want it should be good.

I don't understand why everyone recommends the tiny ass 165 and 170cc runner heads. If you want to make any decent power you need more then that.

IMO, you can make very good power with a 165cc head.

IMO, you can make very good power with a 165cc head.

Take into consideration the average 350 and lsx series motors. They have MASSIVE heads on them compared to even the AFR 165's, and they put down numbers that reflect that. We put on a set of decent sized 170cc runner heads, and barely make 300-350. While they make over 400 with all motor applications all day long. There are a few motor builds i've seen of 5.0s that put down over 400 with the equivalent sized heads of ls1's and typically they make that kind of power. Ford has always choked up there small blocks, and rarely if ever put a decent head on them. GM got the picture with yates and put big heads that made the power.

you are comparing apples to oranges. the lsx motors are a completely different animals with heads that only share the simple fact that they are inline style heads with a sbf unlike its older 23 and 18 degree brothers.

last time i checked the biggest bottle neck on a fuel injected sbf was the intake manifolds not the heads.

I disagree. Call T-moss and thumper. It's the damn thermicator ports and basically pinky sized runners that choke 5.0s up all day long. I understand how you could definately say it's comparing apples to oranges, but in reality they are not all THAT different. Basic principles still apply, and people who are smart enough, with enough patience can make much more power then the average joe. Generally speaking, the average 5.0 owner is perfectly fine with a 170cc runner head, because even those themselves provide considerable gains. I am actually in the process of a stock shortblock, 210cc ported vic jr's, RPM II intake, custom camshaft build right now to prove my point..

I wasn't referring to you. Obviously you've been around the block more then once, i've known you long enough to see that. It's an experiment anyway. By all the reactions I get to it, people say it should be a "dog" and have no torque whatsoever. I beg to differ.

GM also invested millions into the LSX engine design vs a small block ford design that is 40+ years old.

Wouldnt it be a better comparison to use a 351w (or even a 347) to the LSX motors? I dont think anyone would say a 165/170 small head is the appropriate head for those motors.


Its all about the package...you can make big heads work on a 302, but at what cost? The LSX motors will still be better at something. You'll probably be able to run a decent 1/4 mile time, but how will it be driving it on the street? On the highway? You'll probably be revving it high...so you'll need a pretty steep gear.

Very true but too big of a runner and you lose velocity unless you forced induce it. The 5.0 is a smaller motor so going to big without bumping up the cubic inches to match will hurt performance. You have to match your heads, cam, intake, and bottom end to match everything else.
