I dont know for sure. But some states have a law that says, you cant put a engine that is older than the car its going into. I would guess that cali is one, just because how strict they are. Im sure you could look it up online though.

Very likely you cant... ca sucks. But why do they have to know. Find a shady smogger and youre good to go. Thatd be the only thing to worry about.

Nothing is legal in Cali.

If you are putting a fuel injected 351 in the car you could probably lie your way through. But if you put a carburated 351 in, no way will it fly in Cali.

The only truly legal way would be to take it straight out of a cobra r along with every single piece of emissions and exhaust equipment, then take it to the state referee and get an exemption sticker.

If you get it dirty enough and make it look like a 5.0 they won't know the difference. Not sure if there would be ecu issues when they plug in, im not very familiar with the pushrods. I have a clean engine bay and they ran all of my serial numbers when I went to get smogged. Once they failed to find anything wrong with my serial numbers they failed me on "visual smoke" which was just BS because they didnt want to pass me.

Why not just put a stock motor in to get it smogged and then swap it out?

California sucks royal **** and I thought NJ was bad. Atleast we just have to pass emissions since the state the was going broke they couldn't afford to do all the other testing.

351w swap is fully legal, as the engine came stock in another 1995 vehicle.

The Cobra R was not a street car. You needed an SCCA licence to purchase one new. I'm not 100%, but I can't imagine they'd have much for emissions parts on them.
