i started buying 351w parts a while back to build one to swap into my 94 gt and i have yet to buy a block, i want to get a block soon so i can start putting it together this winter. My question is, is there any specific year block that i should get ? Is there a block that may be a stronger than another one ? Its not going to be some super high horsepower beast so i dont need an aftermarket block or anything, thanks

The 1969 block is stronger than the later blocks, especially the late eighties (??) roller blocks. However, it does have a slightly shorter deck height that you should be aware of.

If it's just a cruiser, one of the later EFI roller blocks would be the hot ticket. It is already set up to run roller camshafts/lifters and it has a 1-piece rear main seal.

yeah its going to mainly be a weekday cruiser and weekend track runner (just for fun at the dragstrip, nothin else), im not to conserned on it already being a roller motor, the whole thing is going to be all redone anyways

with the 69 blocks having a shorter deck height, is that going to screw me up on stroking it, i was just planning on getting a complete stroker kit for something that will make it somewhere more than 390 ci, basicly im planning on getting the most cubes that i can out of it without hurting anything, if i could go to a 408 safely then that would be great, but i dont know cause of it having a shorter deck height, im not worried about having to get the block notched or the pistons milled or anything cause i get all the machining work done for free, so any advice would be great, thanks

The '69 block isn't THAT much shorter, but it is definitely something you should consider as I've seen people with them ending up with pistons coming out of the bore a few thousandths.

You can do a 393, 308, or 418. The more stroke you have, the harder (more expensive) it is to get a piston with a lower compression ratio - so that is something you should consider if you ever plan to add a blower or turbo. If you're just staying N/A, then it doesn't matter much.

You'll need a retrofit cam, and you'll need to do something about the lifters (either expensive linkbar hydraulic rollers, solid rollers, or OEM hydraulic with a 'spider' from a 302 installed the block).

If you want advice - GET GOOD CYLINDER HEADS. Don't fear big heads, you have a big motor.

Paul.

cool, little higher compression, its going to be a n/a motor, but at the very most it might have a small 100 shot on it, as the lifters i was going to use the oem one from the 302

the heads i'll be ueing are the gt40X heads i have on the car now, they have already been ported out but have a lot more that can be done, so ill probably get them ported to the max and have bigger valves fit in, as i said before i get all machine work done for free, so i may as well do that to the heads i have instead of spending 2 grand on a different set and i have the edelbrock fuel injection intake and the 90* elbow peice that the throttle body goes onto

one other question, will the 94 AODE bolt to a 351w or would i have to get different tranny, i was hoping to just get the stock one in the car rebuilt

yes, the AODE will bolt up to the 351W....just make sure that you get a 28oz 164T flywheel.....or you can use your current flywheel and have it balanced to the rotating assembly........
